British Values at Haworth Primary School
At Haworth Primary School we uphold and teach pupils about the British Values which are defined as:
- democracy
- rule of law
- individual liberty
- mutual respect
- tolerance of those of different faiths and belief
These values are taught explicitly through our Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education, and Open Minds (Religious Education). We also teach the British Values through planning and delivering a broad and balanced curriculum.
At Haworth, we recognise and learn about a variety of national days across the year, including: international day of democracy, black history month, remembrance day, human rights day and international women's day. Children learn about inspirational people from the past and present (including Queen Elizabeth II, Martin Luther King and Malala Yousafzai), understanding how they have helped to shape Britain and the world in which we live. Haworth children also learn about how our country is governed, the importance of law and order and how governments around the world differ from our own.
We also take opportunities to actively promote British Values through our daily assemblies and whole-school systems and structures, such as electing and running a successful School Council as well as our children taking on additional leadership roles in the form of our school ambassadors. We actively promote the British values through ensuring that our curriculum planning and delivery includes real opportunities for exploring these values. Actively promoting British Values also means challenging pupils, staff or parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British Values, including extremist views.
